For September 2026, the strongest categories are mostly tied to the end of summer and the Labor Day weekend: mattresses, large appliances, patio furniture, grills, outdoor equipment, and summer clearance. Electronics need a little more patience because Black Friday is still ahead.

1. Mattresses: buy now if you actually need one
Labor Day is one of the major mattress sale periods of the year. Current 2026 coverage from Good Housekeeping and Forbes is already showing broad mattress promotions before September even begins.
That makes September a sensible time to shop, but a giant percentage off does not automatically mean a great price. Mattress pricing can be difficult to compare because models, bundles, and list prices vary.

2. Patio furniture and outdoor decor: one of September’s strongest categories
Retailers do not want summer furniture taking up space when fall and holiday inventory is arriving. That seasonal change is what makes late August and September useful for patio sets, umbrellas, outdoor rugs, planters, and similar items.
Current Labor Day coverage from Home Depot and major shopping publications is already showing markdowns across patio furniture and outdoor products. Consumer Reports also points to the end of summer as a time when retailers clear seasonal outdoor inventory.

THE CATCH
The lowest prices often come with less selection. If you need a very specific color, size, or matching set, waiting for the final clearance may leave you with fewer choices.
3. Grills: buy now for next summer, not because grilling season is starting
September is a good time to shop grills for the exact reason spring is not: demand is cooling down.
Consumer Reports says grills often remain on sale for a short period after Labor Day as stores clear remaining inventory. Current Labor Day promotions are also showing discounts across grills and outdoor cooking gear.

A grill you already wanted at a real clearance price. A random grill that is fifty percent off but too small, too large, or poorly reviewed is still the wrong grill.
4. Large appliances: a solid time to buy, but compare before you commit
Refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges, dishwashers, and other large appliances commonly get Labor Day promotions at large home improvement and appliance retailers.
Consumer Reports says large appliance prices often drop around three day holiday weekends including Labor Day, while the weeks leading into Black Friday can bring even deeper pricing. That makes September a good buying window when you need an appliance now, but not necessarily a reason to replace something that still works.

CHECK THE PRICE FIRST
Look at the exact model number, delivery cost, installation, haul away fees, warranty terms, and whether the bundle discount is forcing you to buy an appliance you did not need.
5. Lawn and outdoor equipment: September can reward patience
Lawn mowers, leaf blowers, outdoor tools, and other warm weather equipment can become more interesting as the season changes.
Consumer Reports has historically tracked September discounts across lawn mowers, leaf blowers, chainsaws, grills, and other outdoor equipment. You may trade some product choice for a better price, especially on remaining seasonal inventory.
GOOD FOR PLANNERS
If you know you will need the item next spring, buying at the end of the current season can make more sense than waiting until demand rises again.
6. Summer clothing, swimwear, and sandals: clearance is the point
Retailers need room for fall inventory, which can make September useful for shorts, swimwear, sandals, lightweight dresses, and other summer clothing.
The best use of this category is buying pieces you know you will wear again, not filling a cart because a seasonal item is cheap.

Classic pieces in your normal size can be a smarter clearance buy than trend driven items you may not want by next summer.
What to wait on in September 2026
Most TVs and big electronics
If the purchase is not urgent, November deserves your attention. NerdWallet’s current September 2026 shopping guide recommends holding off on electronics for Black Friday, which falls on November 27, 2026, followed by Cyber Monday on November 30.

That does not mean every September electronics deal is bad. It means you need a stronger reason to buy now. A discontinued model, a student discount, or a genuine price low on the exact laptop you need can still make sense.
Brand new fall fashion at full price
September is when retailers want you excited about sweaters, jackets, boots, and new season collections. If the item is not time sensitive, there is little reason to rush into full price just because the weather changed.
Buy what you need. Wait on what is simply new.
Anything you did not want before the sale started
This is the easiest category to save one hundred percent on.
If the sale created the desire, the discount is not saving you money. You are still spending money you were not planning to spend.
The September price check rule
Before buying anything expensive this month, take five minutes and check four things:
- The exact model number, not just the product name.
- The price at at least two other retailers.
- Delivery, installation, return, and membership costs.
- Whether you would still buy it if the page did not have a countdown clock.
THE USEFUL SIDE RULE
A good sale makes something you already needed cheaper. It does not turn something unnecessary into a smart purchase.
